OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Ty Burns, R-Pawnee, recognized Capt. Gary Vance as the Oklahoma House of Representatives’ Veteran of the Week for his distinguished military service and lifelong dedication to fellow veterans.

“Gary is more than a friend—he’s a brother in arms,” Burns said. “Our bond, like so many forged in service, crosses generations. His bravery in Vietnam and continued service back home set the standard for us all.”

Vance joined the Army National Guard in 1958 while attending Pawnee High School. He later transferred to the Army Special Forces Reserve Unit in Stillwater while enrolled at Oklahoma State University. After completing Infantry Officer Candidate School and the Army Airborne Course, he was accepted to fixed-wing flight school in 1965. During training, he saved a passenger from a crash and received the Soldier’s Medal.

In 1966, he deployed to Vietnam with the 219th Aviation Co., flying more than 800 combat missions as a forward air controller. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Star Medals, 36 Air Medals and the Army Commendation Medal with V device. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame in 2010.

“He’s done more than his share and has inspired so many, including me,” Burns said. “Gary’s life is a testament to what service looks like long after the uniform comes off. Thank you for your service.”

Vance remains active in veteran causes, helping form VFW Post 7966 and leading local efforts to honor those who served.
