NORMAN, Okla. (KOKH) — Norman police are investigating an in-custody death.
Police say 61-year-old Jeffrey Brake died in their custody Sunday morning.
Brake was arrested Saturday morning after he was seen crawling in a roadway, exhibiting signs of being under the influence of narcotics. Police say he was arrested without incident, taken to the hospital, then taken to the Cleveland County Detention Center and booked for public intoxication.
The next morning, officers arrested Brake again after he was seen crawling near an ambulance bay at Norman Regional Hospital. Police received his treatment information from hospital staff, then arrested Brake and took him to the Cleveland County Detention Center once more.
When police got to the jail, they say Brake began to experience a medical emergency. Officers tried life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. Brake was pronounced dead at the hospital.\
Police say there was no use of force involved in either of Brake’s arrests.
Preliminarily, police believe his death was caused by a medical issue.
