This year marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 2,977 people on September 11, 2001, after hijackers crashed three passenger planes into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane was brought down in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back.
“Twenty-five years later, September 11 remains a day of profound grief, but it is also a reminder of the strength displayed by everyday heroes from around our nation,” said Governor Stitt. “We remember the innocent lives taken from their families, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the men and women in uniform who have defended our freedom in the years since. Oklahoma stands with every family affected by this tragedy and with all those who continue to serve our nation.”
Gov. Stitt said Oklahoma will never forget the help New York first responders gave the state after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
“Oklahoma first responders went to Ground Zero to stand alongside the people of New York,” Stitt said. “The bond reminds us that, even in our darkest moments, Americans show up for one another. ”
