TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — In a state often hit by severe weather, Oklahoma homeowners have an opportunity to make their homes more resilient, thanks to a grant program offering up to $10,000 toward roof upgrades.
The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) has officially launched the second phase of its Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Program.
“It aims to provide homeowners, for their primary residency, the ability to fortify their roofs to withstand high wind and hail,” said Ashley Scott, Deputy Commissioner of External Affairs at the OID. “The idea is to provide up to $10,000 in grant funds that is paid directly to the contractor.”
The fortified roofs are built to standards set by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.
“These roofs go above and beyond your average roof system,” explained Dalton Pack, owner of Burggraf Roofing. “Starting with sealing the deck, there are several additional steps to make sure even if you lose shingles, water won’t get into your home.”
With the first phase of the pilot program proving successful, the OID has expanded eligibility to new zip codes. Applicants must apply online through the OID’s official website. While there are no age or income restrictions, there are some key requirements.
Scott explained some of the criteria needed to qualify. “The home must be in good repair. If damaged, it must be from a recent storm and eligible through an insurance claim,” she said.
Scott also emphasized that while the grant can provide up to $10,000, homeowners may be responsible for additional costs depending on the scope of their roofing project.
“Not only does it help customers pay for these upgrades through the grant,” Pack added, “it also gives homeowners the most resilient roofs you can get.”
