Oklahoman’s receiving text messages claiming to be from a recruiter with job offer

People are getting text messages claiming to be from a recruiter with a great job offer.

It’s flattering when someone reaches out to you to offer what sounds like a great job. That’s what’s happening in a recent round of text messages being sent out by scammers to people across Green Country.

One version of the messages claims to be from a recruiter who says you’ve been recommended by multiple online recruitment agencies.

The message says they offer flexible part time and full time work, anytime and anywhere, earning $250 to $500 a day, along with paid annual leave.

Ami Mitchell, CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Oklahoma, said scammers often use real information about you online to make offers sound legit.

“Really think twice. These scammers are really good about that,” she said. “They may even find your own LinkedIn profile even if you haven’t used it for a while and they may say we have a job comparable to the job you have now, so don’t buy into that.”

While some texts offer jobs, another text going around tells people they’re already hired.

“We are seeing a rise in text messages from jobs saying, ‘you’ve gotten the job, here’s how much it is, here are the wonderful benefits,’ Mitchell said. “That’s great. But first of all, did you apply for this job?”

If you haven’t, then it’s clearly a scam. But, if you have applied for a job or multiple jobs recently, the BBB recommends double checking anyway.

“I recommend you go back to the source on which you applied, whether it be the drop application source or the company’s direct website. See where your application stands there,” Mitchell said. “Or contact the company directly instead of clicking on any kind of text messages, calling those phone numbers back, things like that. Most of those are going to be scams.”

Scammers hope you respond to their messages and offer up personal and bank information so they can do a ‘credit check’ to set up payments. Do not click any links or give out personal information to someone you didn’t contact on your own.
