As Independence Day approaches and excitement builds for holiday celebrations, the City of Ponca City would like to remind residents and visitors that fireworks remain illegal to possess, transport, sell, or discharge within Ponca City city limits without the appropriate permit, despite recent changes to Oklahoma state law.
Recent legislation has generated questions regarding the use of fireworks throughout Oklahoma. While state law may allow fireworks in certain jurisdictions, municipalities retain the authority to establish local ordinances governing fireworks within their communities.
City of Ponca City continues to enforce its longstanding ordinance prohibiting the possession, transportation, sale, and discharge of fireworks within city limits unless specifically authorized through a permit issued by the City.
“Our priority is protecting lives, property, and public safety,” said Fire Chief Eddie Shultz. “Fireworks can create significant fire hazards, especially during periods of hot, dry, and windy weather. By maintaining our local ordinance, we are helping reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and property damage while ensuring emergency resources remain available for those who need them most.”
Residents are encouraged to enjoy professional fireworks displays hosted by qualified operators rather than attempting to use consumer fireworks within the city.
Violations of the city’s fireworks ordinance may result in citations, fines, confiscation of fireworks, or other enforcement actions as provided by city code.
The City of Ponca City appreciates the cooperation of residents and visitors in helping keep our community safe during the holiday season. Those with questions regarding the fireworks ordinance or permit requirements may contact the Ponca City Fire Department for additional information.
We want everyone to enjoy the holiday, create lasting memories with family and friends, and return home safely at the end of the celebration. By working together and following local regulations, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable Independence Day for everyone in our community.
Celebrate Responsibly. Celebrate Safely. Celebrate Together
