OSU Department of Plant and Soil Science Chicken Manure Fertility Demonstration Trials

SHARE NOW
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC), working through Dr. Jason Warren, is interested in collaborating with local producers to evaluate the use of chicken manure as a fertilizer source. To support this effort, OSU is seeking to establish a small number of on‑farm demonstration trials in Kay County (and nearby Grant County).
They are currently looking for producer cooperators in Kay County who may be willing to provide access to one or more of the following field types:
  • Corn
  • Soybean
  • Pasture or rangeland
Participation with even one qualifying field would be greatly appreciated, and hosting multiple field types would be ideal. The trials are intentionally small in size and designed to be easy to accommodate within normal farming operations.
Tentative Trial Design:
  • Treatment 1: Check (no application)
  • Treatment 2: Half chicken manure rate (single application)
  • Treatment 3: Half chicken manure rate (two applications totaling the maximum rate)
  • Treatment 4: Maximum chicken manure rate
Each trial will include four replications, with plots consisting of four rows (30″ spacing for corn and soybeans) and 20 feet in length, separated by 10‑foot alleys.
Total footprint per trial: approximately 40’ × 120’ (about 0.12 acres).
This project provides a valuable opportunity to evaluate chicken manure as a locally available, cost‑effective nutrient source, and producer participation is critical to its success.
If you have a field that may be a good fit, or if you’d like additional details, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
