WINTER WEATHER

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews continue to report heavy, blowing snow, limited visibility and slick driving conditions in northwestern Oklahoma and the Panhandle this morning as precipitation continues in these areas. Black ice conditions remain possible in areas where roadways are wet and temperatures remain at freezing or below.

Travel remains discouraged in these areas. Those who must travel should plan extra time to reach their destination this morning and be alert to continued road clearing operations. Drivers should stay at least 200 feet behind these trucks for safety.

In western, north-central and south-central Oklahoma, crews are closely monitoring areas where roads are wet and temperatures are near freezing. Crews are continuing to apply salt and sand to bridges and overpasses this morning in many areas. Conditions could quickly change due to continued precipitation and freezing temperatures, and drivers are urged to use caution.

View www.okroads.org for a map of current closures and snowplow cameras to check conditions before traveling.

NOTE: This office will provide condition updates as conditions change.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
  • Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
