TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz is expected to testify before a grand jury Wednesday that is investigating his office after a volunteer deputy fatally shot an unarmed man in April.

The grand jury is meeting for its eighth week and all testimony is closed to the public. The panel is investigating any wrongdoing after reserve deputy Robert Bates killed Eric Harris, saying he mistook his handgun for a stun gun.

Bates is a former insurance executive and longtime friend of Glanz. Bates has pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the death of Harris and has left the force.

Thousands of residents signed a petition calling for the grand jury investigation after the fatal shooting.
