The Ponca City Senior High Mock Trial team advanced to quarterfinals for the 3rd year in a row. This year’s competition is a little different as it is entirely virtual. Students competed February 2nd against McAlester and Moore. They defeated Moore two ballots to one but lost to McAlester three ballots to zero. Despite only winning one round, they scored high enough to advance to quarterfinals. “We were short a couple of students and had a few last-minute fill-ins. We have a few things to work on, but I expect we will give a decent showing in the quarterfinals,” said teacher/coach Zach Murray. Mock

Trial is a high school competition sponsored by the Oklahoma Bar Foundation to give students experience with the legal process. Students take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses to try a case in front of a judge. Scoring panelists are practicing attorneys. This year’s case is a first-degree murder case centered around a family feud. Current members of the Mock Trial Team are Adon Cornelsen, Eric Cunningham, Morgan Mays, Lily Post, Hunter Robbins, Jenna Stockton, Madison Thibodeaux, Isabel Trimble, Ryan Turnipseed, Savannah Valgora, and Conner Winterhalter. They will compete against the same McAlester team and one of Owasso’s teams February 19th.
