The Kiowa Police Department has requested OSBI special agents investigate an officer-involved fatal shooting that occurred in the city early this morning.

Just after 2 a.m., a Kiowa patrol officer made a traffic stop in the 700 block of Highway 69 at the Sinclair gas station. The officer conducted a frisk of the driver. During the frisk, the officer felt a gun in the man’s coat pocket. The man began to struggle with the officer, trying to pull the gun from his coat pocket. The officer told him several times to stop.

The officer fired his weapon, striking the man. He was transported to the McAlester Regional Hospital where medical staff pronounced him dead.

OSBI special agents spent all morning collecting information and evidence from the scene.

Once the investigation is complete, agents will deliver the written report to the district attorney’s office. The district attorney will determine if the shooting was justified.

Currently, special agents are trying to find the man’s next of kin for a death notification. Once notification is done, the man’s name will be released.
