Stephen Kent Austin

Steve Austin, 69, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, September 6, 2025, at St. Luke's Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory, 505 W. Grand Ave, Ponca City, OK, 74601.

Steve was born on March 1, 1956, in El Dorado, Kansas, to William and Ruby (Richards) Austin. After graduating from high school, Steve earned an Associate's Degree from Butler County Community College and Bryant Institute. In 1984, he began working for the Kay County Clerk’s Office as the Data Processing Manager. He later served as the District Two County Commissioner, retiring in 2013. Following his retirement, Steve and his wife, Mary, made Ponca City their home.

On June 22, 1985, Steve married Mary Midgley in Newkirk, Oklahoma, where they lived for 37 years. He was a dedicated public servant and community leader, serving on the local school board and as a board member for both the Presbyterian Church and later, the First Methodist Church. He also volunteered as a coach for his sons’ ball teams, fostering a love of sports and teamwork.

At the time of his passing, Steve remained active in the community as a member of the Kay County Excise and Equalization Boards, Treasurer for the Academy Hills Homeowners Association, and board member of St. Luke’s Church of the Nazarene.

Steve had a deep passion for golf-he loved to play, watch, and talk about the game. Above all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren, creating lasting memories through game nights and cookie decorating with their beloved “Papa.”

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary; sons Brett Austin, Ryan Austin, both of Ponca City, and Trevor Austin of Sonora, Texas; grandchildren, Avery, Tyler, Hunter, Blake, and Mason; brother, Richard (Margaret) Austin of El Dorado, Kansas; aunt Mary Jo Bruce of Peoria, Illinois; and sisters-in-law Margaret (Reagan) Hutchason, Carol (Rick) Scott, and Mindi Midgley.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, William and Ruby Austin; parents-in-law Frank and Dorothy Midgley; brother-in-law, Cass Midgley; and his cherished dog, Izzy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Luke’s Youth Group, 1715 E Prospect Ave, Ponca City, OK, 74604.

The family invites attendees to wear golf or casual attire in honor of Steve.
