Ponca City Now - July 14, 2015 12:00 am

Ponca City, Oklahoma – Jean Currier, age 84, passed away on July 13, 2015 at Via Christi Nursing Center.

Jean was born on July 2, 1931 on a farm near Renfrow, Oklahoma to Wallace Bailey Cole and Agnes Mae Frederick Cole. She attended country school in Eureka District #27 and Deer Creek Public Schools before graduating from Blackwell High School in 1949. She then lived and worked in Wichita, Kansas while attending night school at Wichita University.

On February 2, 1951, she married Robert Eugene Currier from Lamont, Oklahoma and they settled on a farm between Deer Creek and Medford. They spent the next twenty years on the farm raising their three children Larry Eugene Currier, Linda Jean Currier Brown, and Robert Gary Currier. Jean was a farmer and homemaker during that time, but always had a desire to enter the field of nursing. In 1976, the couple moved to Ponca City where she enrolled in the LPN school at Pioneer-Vo-Tech, graduating in February 1978. They subsequently moved to Tonkawa where she worked at Willow Creek Nursing Home. After the death of her husband in November, 1984, Jean moved back to Ponca City and began working for the Ponca City Hospital, retiring from there in 1995. Finding that retirement took her away from her favorite pastime, visiting with people, Jean began taking in ironing for family and friends until her health would no longer permit. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her life.

When health issues limited her mobility, she would spend hours on the phone visiting with family and friends. Among her treasured memories were the many friends she made at Evans & Associates during her daily ritual of calling the office “to let everyone know that I am up and Okay”!

Jean is survived by her daughter Linda and Husband John of Ponca City, and two sons, Larry and wife Marilyn of Enid, and Gary and wife Sherry of Yukon; six grandchildren, Jason Currier and wife Ashley, Gina McFarland and Husband Billy, both of Enid, Kris Kendrick and wife Adrienne of Edmond, Kara Anderson and husband Matt of Ponca City, Maegen Wise and husband Eric of Bristol, Virginia, and Cole Currier and wife Dana of Branson, Missouri; five step-grandchildren, Janene Brown, Ashley Smith Zachery Mosley, Jonathan Mosely and Magen Heffron; and 19 great-grandchildren and many special brother and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. In addition to her family, she is survived by her special friends; Phyllis Sears, Dorothy Reed, Janet Martin and her many special friends at Evans & Associates.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brother, Robert Lewis Cole.

The funeral will be held on July 16, 10:00 a.m. at Trout Funeral Home Chapel. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Tonkawa Cemetery. Casketbearers will be her grandsons, Jason Currier, Kris Kendrick, Billy McFarland, Matthew Anderson, Cole Currier and Eric Wise. Honorary Casketbearers will be Phyllis and Garyon Sears, , and Dorothy Reed and Gary and Janet Martin. Special seating will be reserved to honor her many friends at Evans & Associates.

In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Ponca City Humane Society and Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.
