Vern “Butch” Dean Barrett

Vern Dean “Butch” Barrett of Ponca City, Oklahoma, died Sunday, October 29, 2017, in Osage County at the age of 70 years.

Vern Dean “Butch” Barrett was born on May 22, 1947, in Anthony, Kansas, to Loren William and Ella Aline (Barnes) Barrett. He grew up in Blackwell and attended Blackwell Public Schools graduating in 1965. He furthered his education by attending Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa for a year before joining the United States Army where he was stationed in California. Following his discharge he returned to Kay County and began working at Carbon Black in Ponca City. He married Nancy Geneva Sartin on February 11, 1977, in Arkansas City, Kansas, and they settled east of Ponca City. He later worked turn-around jobs as a pipefitter and welder for various refineries. His passion was ranching and competing as a steer roper in various rodeos including the Cheyenne Rodeo each summer. He broke horses, enjoyed bucking bulls and living the “cowboy” life. He was a member of the Cowboy Church in Stillwater.

He is survived by his step-mother, Mary Barrett of Blackwell; a son, Brett Barrett and fiancé Jill of Rose Hill, Kansas; a daughter, Brandi Barrett of Arkansas City, Kansas; and four grandchildren, Traven, Blake, Lakyn and Chandler.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Thursday, November 2nd in the Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Mark Mozeik of St. John’s Lutheran Church officiating.

Honorary casketbearers will be Traven Hutton, Blake Barrett, Lakyn Hale and Chandler Barrett.
