Obituary for Velma Hawkins

Velma A. Hawkins, resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at her home. She was 87.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Ranch Drive Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Graber, officiating. Burial will then follow at the Resthaven Memorial Parks in Ponca City, Oklahoma . Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Velma was born on May 3, 1927 to Calvin C. Snyder and Fern R. (Black) in Lamont, OK. She graduated from Ponca City High School in 1945. She was married to Buford "Boots" Hawkins on October 24, 1945 in Wellington, KS. they were married for 35 years until his death. To this marriage they were blessed with four children. She was a homemaker. Some of her favorite hobbies included sewing and later quilting. She was a member of the Pioneer Area Quilters Guild. She loved to cook and collect recipes. After "Boots" death she joined the work force and worked at KMart, the school system and then worked at Conoco retiring there in 1989.

She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, cookouts, and spending time at the dock. Velma loved to spend time with her family, grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. She was a member of 1st Lutheran Church and later a member of the Ranch Drive Baptist Church. She was a loving, caring, and compassionate mother and will be missed by many.

Velma is survived by her children; daughter, Linda Clinton of Ponca City, OK; son, Garland Hawkins and wife Darlene of Ponca City, OK; son, Wayne Hawkins of Ponca City; son, Don Hawkins and wife Lori of Guthrie, OK. Grandchildren Brandy Clinton and spouse Mike Belt of Ponca City, OK; Kevin Clinton and wife Janna of Ponca City, OK; Blaine Hawkins and spouse Tracee of Choctaw, OK and Brandon Hawkins and wife Dani of Joplin, MO. Great-grandchildren include, Dalton Belt, Tanner Clinton, Charlie Clinton, Brody Clinton and Oliver Hawkins. She is also survived by her two brothers, Gerald C. Snyder of Pawnee City, Nebraska and Kenneth W. Snyder of Arkansas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Casketbearers will be Kevin Clinton, Mike Belt, Blaine Hawkins, Brandon Hawkins, and Neil Gory. Honorary casketbearers will be Dudley Barnwell, Jack Snyder, Clyde Roland, Bill Snyder, Mike Snyder, Dwaine Johns.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73132, Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, 1308 E. Bradley, Ponca City, OK or donor’s choice.
