Obituary for Veleta Sherrill

Veleta Geraldine LaBlue Sherrill of Ponca City, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Kennith and Gail LaBlue, at the age of 81 years.

Veleta Geraldine LaBlue Sherrill was born October 6, 1933, in Humboldt, Kansas, to Henry Oscar and Verna Veleta Williams. She began her education in Humboldt, Kansas, before moving to Blackwell, where she attended Blackwell High School in 1948.

Veleta met her husband James Calvin LaBlue in Blackwell and they were married December 31, 1949. She enjoyed motherhood, sewing, candy-making, horseback riding, and traveling.

Veleta was remarried to Burton Sherrill for ten years until his passing on July 30, 1988.

Veleta worked for fifteen years at Conoco Refinery in Ponca City, Oklahoma until her retirement. She was also owner and operator of Sherrills Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning until selling the business.

Veleta is survived by her son, Kennith Ray LaBlue of Wheat Ridge, Colorado; two daughters, Linda LaBlue-Pearson of Chickasha, Oklahoma, and Veleta Ann Bentz of Little Rock, Arkansas; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and two sisters. Veleta is also preceded in death by three sons, Dale Roy LaBlue, James Calvin LaBlue Jr. and Dwaine Allen LaBlue. Veleta was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with the Ponca City congregation for many years.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 3rd in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell, with an Elder from the Ponca City congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
