Obituary for Thelma Peterson

Thelma Marie Peterson of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Tuesday evening, July 14, 2015, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 87 years.

Thelma Marie Peterson was born on December 14, 1927, in Deer Creek, Oklahoma, to Homer and Blanche (Grimsley) Jamieson. She grew up attending Deer Creek Public Schools and graduated from Deer Creek High School in 1946. Following her education she began working at the Hazel-Atlas Glass Plant. She married Shiney Bill Peterson on February 11, 1949, in Newkirk and they settled in Blackwell where continued working at the glass plant. She later worked as a pastry chef for several restaurants, including The Kettle and Hickory House Restaurant in Blackwell. She also worked as a sales clerk for the C. R. Anthony Store. Her husband preceded her in death on December 20, 2010, and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She is most noted for the many pies, cinnamon rolls and wedding cakes she made through the years and the over ninety-two ribbons she won with her pastries at the Kay County Free Fair. Her most prized ribbon was the Grand Champion Ribbon won in 2008 for her pecan pie. She also knitted over one hundred fifty caps for the newborn babies at the Ponca City Medical Center. She attended the First Free Will Baptist Church in Blackwell and held membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing bingo and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Connie Grace and husband Gene of Blackwell and Bonnie Kelly and husband Robert of Blackwell; a son, Lloyd Peterson and wife Donna of Blackwell; four sisters, Fran Michael of Blackwell, Willa Mae Mathews of Blackwell, Esther Mayfield of Stigler, and Darlene Kastanek of Pineville, Louisiana; two brothers, Dennis Jamieson of North Vernon, Indiana, and Darrell Jamieson of Enid, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Nutt; and a grandson, Timothy Peterson.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 18th in the First Free Will Baptist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Kevin Bookout officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Robert Kelly, Gene Grace, Brock Harrold, Darren Grace, Kody Kelly and Colby Peterson.
