Obituary for Sylvester Alexander

Sylvester Alexander, longtime resident of Ponca City, passed April 5, 2015 in Stillwater. He was 91 years of age.

Sylvester was born May 18, 1923 in Pauls Valley, the son of George “Curly” Alexander and Marie (Williams) Alexander. He moved with his family to Ponca City at the age of four. He graduated from Attucks High School in 1941 and joined the U.S. Army in July 1942. He had received the Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Ribbon, AP Theatre Ribbon, and Good Conduct Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from the Army on in 1966 as a Master Sergeant.

He was married to Cherry L. McDaniel on November 2, 1960 in Dothan, Alabama. The couple lived in many locations during Sylvester’s military career, locations that included Korea, Germany, Louisiana and Texas. After Sylvester retired from the Army the couple moved to Ponca City in 1966. Sylvester was involved in the Boy Scout’s as a youth and later in life organized a Cub Scout troop while stationed in Japan.

He was employed at Grace Memorial Chapel beginning in February of 1967 and served the people of Ponca City with 30 years of funeral service. He approached his funeral service as an outreach of love. In addition to working at Grace Memorial Chapel he was a minister. His first church was House of Prayer in Newkirk, which he opened in 1970. In 1986 after that church closed he opened the “Reach Out for Jesus” church in Ponca City. His enjoyments were serving the Lord and in earlier years fishing

He is survived by his daughter, Sharnice, of the home and son Earnest Alexander and wife Pam, of Ponca City; grandchildren Earnest and Danielle Alexander, Zarack, Ana-lia, Mylia, Hassan, Kamdynn, Peyton, Tatum, Cole, Michael Alexander and Kevin Alexander; 8 great grandchildren; a host of great great grandchildren; nieces Patricia McCree and Mary Madison; a host of great great grandchildren; a special great niece Sharon Lampkin; numerous great great nieces and nephews; as well as his church family at Reach Out For Jesus COGIC and many many friends.

He was preceded in death by parents; his step-father, Ralph Williams; his wife Cherry; one daughter, Patricia Alexander; sisters, Lucille Alexander and Mildred Jenkins; a half-brother, George Alexander; granddaughter Michelle Alexander.

Funeral services to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Johnson Temple Church with Pastor Tim Johnson presiding. Interment will follow in the Ponca City I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Casket bearers are Earnest Alexander, Deuce Alexander, Tyrone Madison, Russ Jones, Dashaun Moore and Darryk Barton.
