Obituary for Sarah Paul

Sarah Roughface Paul, former Ponca City resident, passed March 25, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She was 85 years of age.

Sarah was born August 11, 1929 at White Eagle, the daughter of Nelson Roughface and Leona (Biggoose) Roughface. She attended Pawnee Indian School and was a graduate of Haskell Indian School in 1946. She completed nurses training at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Ponca City and received further schooling at the University of Oklahoma.

She then entered the Army Nursing Corp as an officer. She had served at Fort Sam Houston, Brooks Army Hospital and the 98th General Hospital at Neubrucke Nahe, Germany. She was honorably discharged from the Army June 1, 1959 at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. She was married to Harold Glen Paul on November 5, 1955 in Edna, Texas.

Sarah was a charter member of the John Wesley Methodist Church of Victoria, Texas. Her enjoyments included spending time with her family, reading, puzzle books and numbers, listening to music, road trips, pow-wows, playing bingo, and in earlier years, dancing.

She is survived by her two daughters, Glenda Paul-Reyna and husband Michael, of Sand Springs, and Sandy Truman and husband Joe, of Victoria, Texas; three grandchildren, John Reyna and wife Caroline, Jessica McBride and husband Brandon and Grant Truman; two great grandchildren, Hallie Kay McBride and Hattie McBride; two sisters, Evona Roughface Williams and husband Curtis of Grand Prairie, Texas, Diane Kauahquo and husband Richard, of Hobart, Oklahoma; one brother, Alva Roughface, also of Hobart; adopted son, Leland McCain; adopted granddaughter, Amy Lewis; adopted grandson, Dr. John Lukavic; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant baby girl Paul; siblings Bernice Davis, Nellie O’Bergon, Mona Baken, Bronson Roughface, Rev. Dr. Thomas Roughface and Lance Carney.

Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Ponca Indian Methodist Church. A noon meal will be served Saturday, March 28, 2015 with the funeral to follow at 2 p.m. also at the Ponca Indian Church with Bro. Jimmy White presiding. Her burial will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2015 at the Luling, Texas Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Casket bearers are Scott Kauahquo, Jonathan McKinnon, Jim Roughface, B.J. Roughface, K.O. O’Bergon and Michael Williams. Honorary casket bearers are Greg Baken, Damon Roughface, Jerry Roughface, Branden Roughface, Brandon Paul and Cody Paul.
