Samuel “Bud” Earl West, Jr.

October 26, 1925 – October 24, 2018

Samuel Earl “Bud” West, Jr. 92, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Blackwell Hospital.

A celebration of his life will be on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trout Funeral Home of Tonkawa Chapel with Frank Cargill and Bill McKissick officiating. Bud will then be taken to his final place of rest at the Tonkawa I.O.O.F. Cemetery. The time of viewing will be on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Jeff O’Kelly, John Tyler Whicker, Mark Lynch, Butch Baker, Darrel Mendiola, and Eddy Vincent. Honorary pallbearer will be Clay O’Keefe.

Bud was born on October 26, 1925 on a farm near Tonkawa, OK to Samuel Earl West, Sr. and Cora Mae Cotton. He grew up in Tonkawa and completed his GED. He then moved to California following work in construction but ultimately moved back to Tonkawa. On February 20, 1949 he married Jennie Lee Carpenter at her parents farm home east of Tonkawa. Bud’s friend from the Navy, Bob Lynch, and Jennie’s friend, Margaret Willerton stood with them as they were married by Rev. Oden. The two of them then moved to a farm about a mile north of her parents and raised cotton that year.

He moved around to several cities in Oklahoma as well as California, Nevada, and Colorado. He moved back to Tonkawa in 1980 and had been there ever since. While traveling he did some farming as well as construction work until he entered the ministry in 1960. He did pastoring and evangelism from then on. Bud was a part of the Carpenter Union while in California and was ordained in 1970 in Sacramento, CA. He belonged to Assembly of God Church, VFW, Legion, and PVA. While Bud was in the Navy he was stationed at Pearl Harbor as Torpedoman 3-C.

Bud enjoyed spending time with his kids, crusades for other churches here in OK and CA. He built a workshop in the back of the house while in Tonkawa and spent a lot of time enjoying woodwork.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Jaunita West, Dortha Shehorn, Melissa Clayton, Holly Ritter, Bonnie Shearer, and brothers, Claude West and Jesse West.

Bud is survived by his wife, Jennie Lee Carpenter West of Tonkawa, daughter, Barbara West O’Kelley and Jeff of Ponca City, sons, Samuel West and Kathy of Coeurdalene, ID, Roger West and Shelley of Prescott, AZ, grandchildren, Kristina Thompson, Jay Whittenberg, Michelle Whittenberg, Jennifer Arens, Jeannette O’Keefe, Christian West, and Matthew Jordan, as well as 16 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren.
