Ruth Lorraine Brown West was born on Cowskin Prairie near Grove, Oklahoma on August 4, 1923. She passed away on October 27, 2014 in Evans,Colorado in the Gray Cara West group home where she was so blessed to reside. Her parents, George Richard Brown and Elva Lentz Brown, were proud of George’s Cherokee Indian heritage, and Ruth was the third of their six children. Ruth spent her first eight school years in Barnsdall, Oklahoma and graduated from Grove High School in 1939 at the age of 15. After graduation her family moved to Ponca City. In 1941 Ruth graduated from Northern Oklahoma Junior College with an associate degree in business.

Ruth loved living in Ponca City in the 1940s where she worked as a curb hop at Beattie’s. She was also a fountain worker at the Rexall Drug Store. Later Ruth worked as a secretary at Midwest Creamery until she left to become a secretary at Continental Oil Company.

On July 11, 1942 Ruth married Luther Romines West after meeting him at the Liberty Baptist Church in Cross. They were blessed with two children, Duane and Linda. For 65 years they gladly called Ponca City their home. Ruth was a homemaker and wonderful mother. She devoted her life to her family. She was an assistant Cub Scout den mother, a Bluebird leader, and a member of the Lincoln School PTA. For 25 years she was a loyal, faithful volunteer at the Sheltered Workshop. Ruth belonged to the Beta Mothers’ Club, the Criss Cross Home Demonstration Club, and the Post Office Auxiliary.

Ruth was very talented and interested in so many things. She loved to china paint and won first place at the Kay County Fair. Ruth also loved antiques, garage sales, and shopping at flea markets where she found bargains galore. She collected roosters for the kitchen and blue glass vases which she proudly displayed in the living room windows. Her home was as interesting as she was, full of antiques and other precious treasures.

She is survived by her two children, Duane(Janet) West of Greeley, Colorado and Linda West Jacobs(Jon) of Cape Coral, Florida, and her three grandchildren, Darren West of Sausalito, California, and Christine West and Denise West of Denver, Colorado.
