Moira Jean Reed

(January 5, 1932 – March 13, 2016)

Moira Jean Reed went to heaven on March 13, 2016 at the age of 84.

Moira was born on January 5, 1932 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada to Burton Galbraith and Florence Keirstead Galbraith. She grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick on the North Shore of the Bay of Fundy at the mouth of the Saint John River. She graduated from Saint John High School and attended Saint John Vocational School, receiving a teaching certificate in Home Economics.

She taught at Canterbury Regional High School and then at Fredericton High School. During the summers she attended Penn State University where she met Philip Warren Reed whom she married on August 22, 1953. They lived at State College for two years while he obtained his Masters Degree. In September 1955, they moved to Ponca City where Philip went to work for Continental Oil Company.

Moira was active in the First United Methodist Church of Ponca City where she was a member of the Covenant Sunday School Class. She served as President of the United Methodist Women, Chairman of the Education Commission, Adult Coordinator organizing the School of Continuing Education, and as Sunday School Superintendent. She was a certified lab leader in adult education and a literacy tutor and tutor trainer. In the community, Moira served as president of the Delta Mother’s Club, the International Club and the Pioneer Porcelain Artists. Moira enjoyed baking, reading, sewing, china painting, the color blue and a cup of hot tea.

Moira is survived by Philip, her husband of 63 years, her daughter, Ruth Carrie and son-in-law, Jeff. Surviving family also includes one grandson, Brian; three granddaughters, Cassandra, Sarah and her husband, David, Jessica and her husband, Toby; two great-granddaughters, Ava and Leighton; and two sisters, Sandra Fox and Paula Valpy.

Philip and Moira had a daughter, Martha Jean, who died in August 1979. Moira was also preceded in death by her parents and brothers Jack, Bob and Ronald.

A memorial service for Moira will be held at The First United Methodist Church on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery will follow the service. Donations may be made in her honor to Dearing House Child Advocacy Center, 311 S. 13th Street, Ponca City, OK 74601.
