Lois (Deffner) Nix

(December 30, 1924 – February 7, 2017)

God’s voice has softly called her. Lois Deffner Nix passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Ponca Nursing Home at the age of 93.

Lois was born December 30, 1924 in Tulsa, OK to Walter and Emma (Weber) Deffner and was baptized January 5, 1925 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Tulsa.

She married her High School Sweetheart, George Nix II, on November 26, 1942 at the First Lutheran Church by the Rev. Carl Benson, and remained sweethearts for 73 years. They had two sons, George Nix III and Dan.

During World War II, while George was serving in the South Pacific, Lois worked for South Western Bell Telephone Co. for 14 years. Later, while living in Sedalia, MO, she worked in the personnel dept. of Town and Country Shoes for 29 years.

She was raised on the 101 Ranch and attended country schools before schooling in Ponca City. She was an FFA Queen Attendant and in the graduating class of 1943. She was a 4-H Club Leader, Den Mother, and Homeroom Mother. Lois had a great love for children, and also taught Sunday School andVacation Bible School for 40 years. In 1971, she taught Vacation Bible School in Healy, Alaska. Lois was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and was on the Board of the social Ministry at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Sedalia, MO. She was runner-up for Missouri Lutheran School Teacher of the Year. She started several programs, which are still in operation, and was a church greeter who did home visitations for several years.

Lois dearly loved her family and relatives and had great joy with family dinners. Her faith and love of God was most evident, her motto was “Always teach the children to pray”. She loved to travel, with 2 trips to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, and extensively in numerous U.S. states. She was most active with her husband and sons attending livestock shows, rodeos, and showing American Quarter horses and Herford cattle.

She is survived by husband, George II; son, George III and late wife, Toni of Edmond, OK, their three children and four grandchildren; her son, Dan Nix and wife, Peggy of Grain Valley, MO and their two children and three grandsons; a sister, Pauline Miles of Ponca City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family will be receiving friends at Trout Funeral Home on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral ceremony will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Ponca City. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Lutheran Church School of Ponca City.
