Ponca City Now - June 12, 2015 12:00 am

Lloyd R. Henderson was born July 3, 1924 on a family farm south of Cherokee Oklahoma to Ima Harris and Justin C. Henderson.

He died June 10th, 2015 after a short illness, surrounded by his family in his home in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He attended school in Alfalfa County, first in the Brooks/Lambert district and then later in Cherokee, Oklahoma. At the outset of WWII, Lloyd joined the Navy where he served in Europe and was in the English Channel on D-Day and later served in the Pacific theater. He was later awarded his high-school diploma with other WWI veterans that enlisted prior to their graduation.

Lloyd married Joan Ford on December 22, 1943. They lived for a short time in Montana, before establishing their home in Cherokee. Lloyd was active in the 1st United Methodist Church, Lions Club, and American Legion as well as participating in multiple community projects. Lloyd worked at J.W. Metz lumber yard in Cherokee until he went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in 1965. He retired from Metropolitan in 1985 and spent his “retirement” doing multiple projects for his community, his kids and his grandkids. A man of few words, fixing and building things for those he cared about was his talent and his passion.

Lloyd and Joan moved to Ponca City in 2008 to be nearer to their family.

Lloyd is survived by wife Joan; their three children, Sandy Hartman, Dennis Henderson and Linda Palmer; Sandy’s two daughters Julee Owen and Shelly Hartman, and Julee’s husband Keith Owen; Dennis’ wife Bridget Henderson and his daughters Marna Favor and Lori Hampton and Marna’s husband Rod Favor; Linda’s husband Mark Palmer and their children Drew Palmer and Carrie Sparling, Drew’s wife Vanessa Palmer and Carrie’s husband Jeff Sparling; six great grandchildren Chloe Hilger and her husband Cory Hilger, Tristen Hampton, Ben Palmer, Kate Sparling, Corley Palmer, and Charlotte Sparling; and one great great grandchild, Maddux Hilger; as well as an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
