May 27, 1934 – February 18, 2024

Lawrence D. Bing “The Cookie Man” Shelton, 89, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2024, at his home. Viewing will be held between 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Sunday, February 25, 2024, with the family present between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, and 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Monday February 26, 2024, at Trout Funeral Home. A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, February 26, 2024, at Northeast Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Melton officiating. Those unable to attend the Funeral Ceremony, may attend virtually on the Trout Funeral Home website, www.troutfuneralhome.com and click on the live-stream or toolbar icon on the top right corner after 1:45 PM. Burial will immediately follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Ponca City. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory, 505 W. Grand Ave, Ponca City, OK, 74601.

Bing was born on May 27, 1934, in Ponca City, OK, to James and Frances Shelton. Bing resided in Ponca City, OK, his entire life. On June 1, 1954, Bing went to work for the Ponca City Fire Department. After 20 years of service, he retired on June 1, 1974, with the rank of Master Mechanic; equivalent to Assistant Chief. Bing was also a member of the scuba diving water rescue team. In 1967, when the city took over the ambulance service, Bing was the first to be a part of that service.

In 1956, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict and served 2 years at Ft. Hood, TX, as a mess Sergeant. In 1958, he returned to the Ponca City Fire Department. After retirement, he worked for Lee Way Motor Freight for 10 years. He then worked for the Ponca City School system for several years, then worked with Elsie in B&E upholstery until the present time. In 1960, he married Elsie Bradley in Ponca City where they shared life and love for 63 years with their 5 children. He was baptized September 24, 1967, at Liberty Baptist Church and has been a member of the Northeast Baptist Church for the last 24 years.

Bing loved his family. He was very active in family activities. Spending summer vacations camping in Noel, MO, on the Elk River where he loved fishing with his children and having catfish dinners. He also enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sporting events. Bing also took pride in his home and loved mowing the grass, but his most favorite thing to do was making cookies.

Bing is survived by: his wife, Elsie, of the home; children, Marcie Shelton of Hutchinson, KS, Donna Merz and her husband, Dean, of Ponca City, OK, Gary Shelton and his wife, Pam, of Yukon, OK, John Shelton of Ponca City, OK; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Ronnie Shelton and his wife, Myrna, of Ponca City, OK, Pat Shelton of Ponca City, OK, Margaret Shelton of Ponca City, OK; and sister-in-law, Wanda Shelton, of Ponca City, OK. He is preceded in death by: a son, Dwayne Shelton; parents, James and Frances Shelton; brothers, Tim Shelton and Jim Shelton and a sister, Nancy Hawthorn.
