George E. Mortensen

(February 8, 1925 – December 22, 2015)

George Elmer Mortensen Jr. of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Tuesday evening, December 22, 2015, at his home in Blackwell at the age of 90 years.

George Elmer Mortensen Jr. was born on February 8, 1925, in Chadwell, Virginia, to George Elmer and Ruth Catherine (Smith) Mortensen Sr. At the age of four he moved to Kay County and attended Chikaskia Valley Rural School and Blackwell Public Schools. He graduated from Blackwell High School in 1943 and was honored as Maroon Spirit of his class. He furthered his education by attending Oklahoma A. & M. in Stillwater where he received certification in diesel mechanics. Following his education he entered the United States Marine Corps in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1952. Upon his discharge he began working as a diesel mechanic for International Harvester in Kingman, Kansas, and Blackwell. He married Virginia Ruth Hardin on December 1, 1956, in Gainesville, Texas, and they settled in Oklahoma City, where he worked for a machine shop. In 1957 they moved to New Mexico for a year before returning to Blackwell where he owned and operated Jack’s Auto Supply for forty years. He was a member of the American Legion and the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed farming, hunting and attending his grandchildren’s sporting activities. He also served as a hospital volunteer and was very active as a Red Cross Blood Donor.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Mortensen of Blackwell; a daughter, Debra Childers and her husband Chris of Blackwell; two sons, John Mortensen and wife Debora of Newcastle, and Gene Mortensen and wife Linda of Troy, Michigan; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John C. Mortensen; and a sister, Ruth Catherine Bardin.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 26th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his honor with the Western Kay County Chapter of the American Red Cross in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
