Ret. Sheriff Everette H. Van Hoesen – Veteran

January 30, 1949 – May 19, 2018

Ret. Sherriff Everette H. Van Hoesen long time Ponca city resident passed away Saturday morning with his loving wife by his side. He was 69 years of age. Everette was born on January 30, 1949 in Enid, OK to Howard L. and Gladys Pearce Van Hoesen.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Grace Episcopal Church with Father Dee Bright officiating and Deacon Steve Mallory assisting. Interment will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving relatives and friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Arrangements are under the care of Grace Memorial Chapel of Ponca City. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made in Everette’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s hospital.

Everette grew up in Billings, Oklahoma and graduated in 1967. He served a tour of duty in the United States Army from 1969 – 1970 during Vietnam. Everette obtained an Associate Degree from NOC. February 14, 1970 Everette married the love of his life Sonja L. Terry and they made their home in Ponca City. Everette joined the Ponca City Police Department on May 1, 1972 and when he retired May 1, 1997 he was the Assist Chief. In 2004 Everette was elected Kay County Sherriff and after serving Kay County for 12 years he retired in 2016. Everette enjoyed raising Belgium Draft Horses, spending time and spoiling his grandchildren. He also loved a good debate and he was an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church.

Surviving are wife Sonja of 48 years, 1 Son; Chad Van Hoesen and wife Casey and 1 daughter; Ashley Rumford and husband Justin all of Ponca City, OK Grandchildren; Callie Jo Van Hoesen, Emma Lynn Van Hoesen, Livi Rumford, Lola Rumford and Bandy Rumford. 2 sisters; Audrey Stratton and Dolores Van Hoesen both of Enid, OK and 1 sister in law; Betty Van Hoesen of Wichita, KS.

Everette was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother; Lavern Van Hoesen and 1 brother in law Harlan Stratton.
