Obituary for Edna Green

Edna Opal Green of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2013, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 97 years.

Edna Opal Green was born on December 3, 1916, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to John Thomas and Nora Agnes (Barnes) Whitehead. She grew up in Ponca City attended Ponca City Public Schools. She married Christopher Green on June 2, 1943, in Emporia, Kansas, and they settled in Wichita, Kansas, where she worked for the Boeing Aircraft Company during World War II. Following the war she returned to Blackwell and began working for the Hazel-Atlas Glass Plant until the plant was destroyed by the tornado in 1955. In 1962 she was hired by the Blackwell Police Department. She began her career as a meter maid and later became an officer and dispatcher. She also served as matron and records clerk. Edna retired from the police department in 1981 after nineteen years of service. Several years later she began a new career as a volunteer at the Good Buy Shop in Blackwell where she made many friends and enjoyed many happy hours of volunteer work. She held membership in the First Free Will Baptist Church and loved sewing, crocheting and other crafts.

She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Kay Parish of Ponca City; four grandchildren, Darrin Jann and wife Jalayne of Oklahoma City, Dale Jann of Oklahoma City, Sabrina Lewis and husband Gordon of Ponca City, and Molly Alvarado and husband Marvin of Blackwell; great grandchildren, Michael Jann, Alex Jann, Lynsi Jann, Kylie Jann, Jayci Jann, Amber Hankla, Jessica Lewis, Tyson Lewis, Brittany Parish, Marvin Alvarado Jr. and Jackie Alvarado; great great grandchildren, Emilio Parish and Karsyn Jann; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Harry, Frank, Fred, Walter and Earl Whitehead; and two sisters, Estella Gillespie and Virginia Gasaway.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 13th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with Rev. Matt Smith of Immanuel Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Gordon Lewis, Jeremiah Glover, Darrin Jann, Alex Jann, Marvin Alvarado and Marvin Alvarado Jr.

A memorial has been established in her honor with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for heart research in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
