Obituary for David Jacobs

David Allen Jacobs – Veteran

August 15, 1941 – January 4, 2019

Mr. David Allen Jacobs of Ponca City went to be with the Lord on January 4, 2019. He was 77 years old. He was born on August 15, 1941 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Victor and Sylvia (Ham) Jacobs. Dave attended Ponca City Schools, graduating in 1959. After graduation he enrolled at the Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas where he completed one year of undergraduate studies. He then transferred to Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma to complete another year of studies. In 1961, he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma where completed his undergraduate work. Dave received his Bachelor of Arts degree from OU in 1963. From 1963 until 1966 he attended OU Law School where he earned his Doctorate of Juris Prudence.

Dave was a lucky man. He married the love of his life, EvaLee (Ebby) Ham on September 1, 1962 and they were happily married until his death. On September 16, 1967 the couple welcomed a baby boy into their lives. Nathan was the pride and joy of Dave’s life.

Dave joined the U.S. Navy in 1966. He attended Officer Candidate School and communications school in Newport, RI and was commissioned as an officer there. Dave was assigned to the USS Forrestal and served in the Bay of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. He was stationed on the USS Forrestal when she caught fire on July 29, 1967. After the tragedy, he was reassigned to Taiwan as a MSTS officer where he served for two years. Dave was discharged from the Navy in Oakland, California and returned to Oklahoma. He remained in the Navy Reserves until retirement in 1995 obtaining a rank of Lieutenant Commander LCDR.

From 1970-1975 the family lived in Lawton, Oklahoma where Dave worked as an assistant District Attorney for Commanche County. In 1975 they returned home to Ponca City. Dave opened a private practice of law here with Marland Johnson and worked as a public defender. In October of 1975, Dave began working for the Kay County District Attorney’s Office on a part-time basis. Then, from 1980 until his retirement on October 1, 1995 he was employed there full time.

His hobbies included hunting, golf, traveling and “dates with Nora.”

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judy Lawson.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Ebby of the home, son Nate C Jacobs and wife Nora of Ponca City, three grandsons; Sean and wife Rachel West, Jeffery Winkler, and Timothy Winkler, four great grandchildren; Sara West, Brock West, Marshall Winkler, and Jennifer and husband Carson Combest, and one sister Nancy McEnany.

A Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Community Christian Church of Ponca City. The minister Marilyn Merle will officiate.
