Darrell Douglas Waymire

May 14, 1956 – June 19, 2018

Darrell Douglas Waymire went to be with his lord and savior on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. He was 62 years old. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Grace Memorial Chapel in Ponca City at 11:30 a.m. The minister Adam Phillips will officiate the service.

Darrell was born on May 14, 1956 in Wichita, Kansas to Jack Douglas Waymire and Melba Virginia (Penny) Howe Waymire. Although the family moved around between Texas, California, Kansas and Oklahoma, he graduated high school in Fairfax, Oklahoma. After graduating he drove a rock hauling semitruck for his dad’s company, carrying on a family tradition. On July 10, 1986 he married the love of his life, Joann Ward Waymire. Darrell had a mind like a steel trap, he never forgot a birthday or anniversary. He used his tireless memory to build one of the biggest statistical caches of sports information in modern times. He was a brilliant statistician, being able to recite at any moment any fact about almost any sports team at all. He was especially fond of the Chicago Cubs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Cowboys, and of course, OSU. Darrell also had a love for music. He was a huge Beatles fan and had a favorite Paul McCArtney t-shirt he could often be seen wearing. He went to Tulsa to see Paul in concert with his sister, Kathy one evening. It was the first “real” concert he had ever been to. They had “nose bleed” tickets but at the last minute someone with great seats canceled and they were able to sit up close. That was a very treasured memory for him and his family. Over time he and Kathy ended up going to see Rod Stewart and even ZZ Top. His favorite color was blue, favorite food was chocolate and favorite drink was Dr. Pepper. Although he wasn’t supposed to have caffeine, you never saw Darrell without his Dr. Pepper. He enjoyed watching westerns on TV including Bonanza and Gunsmoke. He was a sweet and kind man, but he was also a typical Waymire. He could be stubborn, inpatient and even grumpy just like his dad. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church of Ponca City. He worked at Albertson’s for many years on the carousel and later as a maintenance man.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory one sister Elaine and husband Dick Cruzan of Ponca City, niece April and husband Chris Adams, great nephew Maxwell Adams and great niece Genevieve Adams all of Ponca City, nephew Jesse and wife Beth Wilhelm of Oregon, brother-in-law George Wilhelm of Ponca City , an Aunt Ila Marie Waymire of Bakersville, California as well as a host of cousins.

He joins in heaven his parents Jack and Penny Waymire, Wife Joanne, sister Kathy Whilhelm, (We hope he and Kathy are rocking out in heaven!) and also two infant twin baby brothers Thomas and Charles Waymire.

He was loved more than words can say and will be missed forever.
