Obituary for Clyde Landis

Clyde Ray Landis, longtime Ponca City resident, passed Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Via Christi Village. He was 83 years of age.

Clyde was born October 11, 1930 at Lamont, Oklahoma, the son of Clyde Landis and Alice Grace (Woodring) Landis. He was a 1949 graduate of Ponca City High School where he participated in wrestling. During his high school days Clyde had worked in the Ponca City movie theatres that included the Roxie, Poncan, Ritz, Airline and Murray theatres.

Clyde joined the United States Navy in 1951and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He served aboard the USS Haven, an 800 bed hospital ship where he was an engine room machinist mate. He received the Asian Pacific Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, Navy Ribbon and the United Nations Medal with 4 battle stars. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 13, 1954.

He was married to Helen Goings on September 18, 1954 in Nevada, Missouri. Clyde was employed as a lithographer with Conoco for 14 years, retiring in 1984. He also had worked for Braudrick Printing, Skinner Printing, Southwest Stationary, and Mayshark Lithography in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Clyde was a member of the Community Christian Church, the Korean Veterans Association (known as the Greybeards), a life member of the American Legion where he served as bingo chairman for 8 years, and the V.F.W. His enjoyments included his children and grandchildren, fishing, taking trips to Branson, cooking out in the back yard, going to wrestling matches, attending his ship reunions and family gatherings. In earlier years he helped with his son’s Boy Scout Troop, and attended father and daughter functions.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of the home; one son, Steven Landis and wife Kaylyn, of Enid, Oklahoma; two daughters, C. Kay Landis of Ponca City, and Debby R. Posey and husband Raymond, of Burns Flat, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Leo Neuerburg and wife Karren, Jason Neuerburg, Torie Garcia and husband Nick, James Pollak and wife Brenda, and Keegan Pollak; three great grandchildren, Paige Booth, Kylie Pollak and Ethan Garcia; other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gladys Graham, Mary Wherle and Laureda Daniels; one brother, Richard Landis; one granddaughter, Ivanna Neuerburg.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at the Community Christian Church, 2109 West Grand. Reverend Susan Payne will preside over the service assisted by former pastor Mark Lyon. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Casket bearers are grandchildren, Leo Neuerburg, Jason Neuerburg, James Pollak, Nick Garcia, Fred Landis, Torie Garcia and Keegan Pollak. Honorary casket bearer is good friend Bob Faken.
