Obituary for Althea “Mayanpimi” Young

Althea Lynn Young, resident of Stillwater, passed Friday, June 5, 2015 in Tulsa. She was 49 years of age. Althea’s Indian name is “Mayanpimi” which means good earth woman.

Althea was born July 6, 1965 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Elton Lloyd Young and Regina Ann Bassett-Andrews. She was a 1983 graduate of Red Rock High School and earned an Associate Degree in Psychology from Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Oklahoma. Her enjoyments were spending time with her daughters, making and fringing shawls, and listening to music.

She is survived by her two daughters, who were affectionately known as her cubs, Crissy Manus Frye, Indian name “Odasjimi”, and Josie Manus, Indian name “Etawahumi”, both of Stillwater; one brother, Tim Black of Ponca City and one sister, Robin Andrews of Stillwater; nieces and nephews, Josh Black, Lisa Black, Sheldon Kihega, Chase Black, Dante Morales, Rhiannon Morales, Kaden Jonas, Christen Delano, Jasmine Davis and Caleb Andrews; other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Victor Young and Ronnie Andrews.

Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the Otoe-Missouria Cultural Center. A noon meal will be served on Monday, June 8, 2015 also at the Cultural Center followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. Pastor Jimmy Kenner of the Otoe Indian Baptist Church will preside over the service. Burial will follow in the Otoe-Missouria Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Casket bearers are Tim Black, Joshua Black, Merlin Logan, Royce Forte, Kody Forte and Patrick Arkeketa. Honorary casket bearers are Frank Carson and Dennis “Punkin” Black.
