Matthew Douglas Mercer

September 23, 1984 - April 15, 2026

Matthew Douglas “Matt” Mercer, 41, went to heaven on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. He was born on September 23, 1984, in Norman, Oklahoma, to Gordon and Nellie Mercer. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm at Trout Funeral Home in Tonkawa. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Trout Funeral Home, 505 Thunderbird Rd. Tonkawa, Oklahoma, with burial to follow at Mount Olive Cemetery in Nardin, Oklahoma.

Matt attended Norman Public Schools from kindergarten through high school where he graduated from Norman High School in 2004. During his high school years, he was a standout athlete, lettering in four sports: football, wrestling, baseball, and track. He later attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, on both athletic and academic scholarships.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Hunter Mercer; maternal grandmother, Margaret Trent; maternal uncle, Rick Trent; paternal grandfather, Douglas Mercer; and aunt and uncle, Mary and Dewayne Smith, along with several other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Matt is survived by his parents, Gordon and Nellie Mercer; his sister, Amber Mercer Chavers and husband Matthew; nieces, Blakely, Tatum, and Harper Chavers; nephews, Nolan and Celton Pickett; and his paternal grandmother, Colene Mercer of Blackwell. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members, including Peggy and Charles Hollars, RJ Trent, Tyler, Morgan, and Ryatt Overstreet, Molly, Darren, and Zane Bankston, Carla and Patrick Young, Kevin and Noelia Young, Kimberly and Patrick Collogan, Sally Plagens, and Barbara and Jim Pearson.

Pallbearers will be Jaime Arreola, Stan Aldrich, Celton Pickett, Stan Keeley, Patrick Young, and Kevin Young.

Matt will be remembered for his athleticism, dedication, and the love he had for his family and friends.
