LaVerna Ailene Wieland
September 10, 1929 - September 12, 2025
LaVerna Aliene “Bernie” Wieland of Blackwell, Oklahoma, departed this life on September 12, 2025, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, at the age 96 years.
LaVerna Ailene “Bernie” Wieland was born on September 10, 1929, in the house at 1-35 and Hubbard Road, which is still standing Southwest of Blackwell, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Travis Granville and Ethel (Whitney) Looper. She was raised in the old house attending Blackwell Public Schools graduating from Blackwell High School. At the age of fifteen she began working for Kress Store becoming a department manager at an early age. She met Richard Wieland, and they married on June 21, 1947. During World War II she moved with her family to California, moving a total of seventeen times in seventeen years. She worked for Dentist Clifford Hooper as a dental assistant, receptionist, and office manager for thirty-five years. She later owned and operated Bernie’s Country Bazaar on Doolin from the late 70’s till the late 90’s demonstrating her skills and passions by creating silk flower arrangements for weddings and place settings, macramé, miniature people and places. She made many of her own clothes and made them for other people. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed flowers and pillows redecorating her home for every season. Neuropathy stole Bernie’s ability to walk and keep her balance, but it spared her mind and personality. She was able to communicate easily with family and friends and share her wisdom and skills. In Bernie’s last few days, the family was able to say our goodbyes in the most beautiful and personal way. God saw Bernie was getting tired and put his arms around her and whispered – come with me. Without a doubt Bernie and Richard are reunited in their Heavenly Home with their Lord and Savior.
Bernie leaves behind a legacy of faith, purpose and unconditional love for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard Wieland; and two sisters, Jan Ritter, Shirley Breece.
She is survived by two sons, Chris Wieland and wife Sharon Kay of Blackwell, Oklahoma; and Barry Wieland and wife Valerie of Mulvane, Kansas; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and one brother, Darrell Looper Beaver, Oklahoma.
A Graveside Service will be held 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Blackwell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the memorial contributions in her honor may be made to either the Blackwell Methodist Church, or to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.
