Joyce Fay Johnson
July 7, 1935 - November 16, 2025
Joyce Fay (Hurst) Johnson was born in Maude, Oklahoma on July 7th, 1935, to David William Hurst and Hazel Pauline Boydston Hurst. She has two sisters, Betty LaRue and Barbara Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen R. Johnson, Sr., mother Hazel, and father David.
Joyce’s early years growing up were spent in the Seminole, Oklahoma area. Her father’s work moved the family often, but they finally made their home in Blackwell, Oklahoma.
Joyce married Glen R. Johnson, Sr. on April 21st, 1948, and they made their home in Tonkawa for two years. Moving to Blackwell, early in 1951, they made their home raising their family here. Leaving behind are five children of this union. They are Pamilla Tripp and her husband Tom, Glen Johnson, Jr. and Linda, Mark Johnson and his wife Kathy, Ken Johnson and his wife Lilly, and Douglas Johnson and his wife Ruth.
Joyce continued her education, including one year of college getting an Intensive Business Degree, and began working for Continental Oil Company in 1969, retiring in May of 1985. She then started a Bait and Tackle shop in downtown Blackwell. The store was fun to run, and she loved the customers. While running the tackle shop, she then went back to school and earned a Real Estate Associate's degree and worked in Real Estate for three years. During her career, she was a bookkeeper, paymaster, billing agent, and handled all tax reports for her husband’s business until his retirement.
After that, she took the position of Executive Secretary for Associated Charities for three years. Late 1991, once her husband retired, she then took the managership of a Texaco Service station on the Navajo Reservation in Keyenta, Arizona. She managed the store for a year and decided it was time to come home.
She loved traveling with her family and husband, water skiing, picnicking, taking pictures, playing the piano, writing, and reading. When she became widowed, she then tackled the tough job of taking classes once more and earned a degree in writing from the Institute of Children’s Literature.
She was an accomplished writer, authoring and publishing two books during her later years of 89 and 90.
She and her husband both joined the Church in April 1963, together, and attended until his work sent the family elsewhere. Coming back from Texas in 2008, they settle in their home, and Joyce came back to the Church. She was married to her husband for 60 years – together having five children, twelve grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Her favorite books of the bible were Daniel, Isaiah, and Revelation. She memorized the first fourteen verses of St. John and repeated them flawlessly for the church to earn a new bible when she was 10.
