Gary Dale Chitwood
August 13, 1948 – February 24, 2026
Gary Dale Chitwood of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away February 24, 2026, at the age of 77.
Gary was born on August 13, 1948, in Blackwell, to Ermil and Laura Belle (Shupe) Chitwood. He spent all of his life in Blackwell, with the exception of his military service. He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1966, and served for four years as a Mortarman in the Vietnam War, during the Tet Offensive, as part of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines.
Upon returning, he became a Blackwell Police Officer, serving for 20 years. He married Karla Taton in 1968, and they had a daughter together, Tamara Rose, in 1970. Gary and Karla later divorced in 1992. He also retired as Police Chief in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by one sister, Irene Hudson.
He is survived by his daughter, Tamara Huffman and husband Donnie of Branson, Missouri; two grandchildren, Wyatt Hall and wife Tori of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Baylie Hoeck and husband Kyle of Branson, Missouri; four great-grandchildren: Kru, Rylan, Lottie Hoeck, and Henley Hall; life-partner Janet Richards of the home; bonus children: Michael Richards and wife Carol of Rose Hill, Kansas, and Jill Dasen of Florida; bonus grandchildren: Austin, Ashleigh, Samantha, Connor, and Remington; bonus great-grandchildren: Ruby, Emmie, Lochlan, and one to-be-born in April; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, from 10:00 AM–7:00 PM, at Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
A Graveside Service will be held for Gary on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in the Blackwell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, ℅ Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
