Elmer Wynn

Elmer Douglas Wynn

August 28, 1934 – December 17, 2025

Elmer Douglas (Bud) Wynn died at his home on December 17, 2025, at the age of 91 years.

He was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma, on August 28, 1934, to Elmer Lester and Martha Pearl (O’Dell) Wynn. He attended Blackwell schools graduating with the class of 1953. During high school he began working for Charley Krisman at the Blackwell Iron and Supply Company and worked there until he entered the Army where he served in Korea during 1957 and 1958. Upon his return to Blackwell, he worked for a year in the oilfield and then began working at the Blackwell Zinc Company until he was called back into active duty through the Inactive Army Reserve during the Berlin Crisis in l961. He once again worked in the oilfield on his return nine months later until March of 1964 when he began working for the Continental Carbon Company in Ponca City, which later became the Witco Chemical Company. He worked there for 32 ½ years, retiring in August 1996. Mr. Wynn was also well known as a tree trimmer in the community. He learned this trade as a young boy helping his granddad and then began trimming with his dad in 1964 as a part-time job on evenings and weekends. He retired from this in 2000.

He and Thurra Holman, also a Blackwell native, were married June 20, 1959, and raised their family here. Mr. Wynn was baptized into the Presbyterian Church as a youth, belonged to the BPOE, the NRA, the Ponca City Rifle & Pistol Club and the American Legion. He had been a member of the Hot Wheels Association and was an avid collector of these toy cars from 1991 until he sold his entire collection in 2013. He was known as the “Hot Wheel Guy” during those years when he gave these cars to the kids at Halloween instead of candy. His other pastimes and hobbies included motorcycle riding, bowling, snow skiing and golf. He and his wife made three trips to Canada on their motorcycle. Over the years, by motorcycle and his pickup, they traveled to all of the lower 48 states and flew to Hawaii in 2005. He was also very talented working at remodeling his home and building garages and outbuildings for himself and family. He enjoyed making rocking horses for his grandsons and others over the years which are cherished by family and friends.

From 2010 until 2018 he was an active volunteer at the Good Buy Shoppe in Blackwell. Through Conoco's retiree program he had been able to use those hours to donate one thousand dollars each year to the Opportunity Center in Ponca City which he did for nine years. He felt honored to be an Eagle Scout mentor in 2017.

Mr. Wynn is survived by his wife, Thurra, of the home, two sons, David and his wife, Brenda, of Batavia, Ohio, and Darin and his wife, Cindy, of Blackwell; two grandsons, Landon Drew of Blackwell and Nicholas Alexander of Batavia; his sister, Martha Ann Stewart, Rogers, Arkansas; a sister-in-law, Connie Wynn, of Ponca City plus numerous nieces and nephews and friends He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, Tristan Dean Wynn, his sister, Lillian Newland and his brother, Ralph Wynn.

Elmer was a man who touched many things. He could build, repair, restore and make beautiful things. Now there is no one to do things just the way he did them. If you knew Elmer, you know there was a right way, a wrong way and Elmer Wynn's way. But, his way has left numerous buildings, restorations and many cherished items that his hands touched and he will be remembered by. Sadly, a great talent is gone.

Cremation has been affected and a graveside service at the Blackwell Cemetery will be held later in the spring. A notice with date and time will be published prior and placed on Elmer’s webpage at Roberts and Son Funeral Home.

The family would like to sincerely thank ACG Hospice for their outpouring of compassion, kindness and care during Elmer's time of need. Each individual involved was truly appreciated.
