An 81-year-old Kaw City man died Monday in a two-vehicle accident on State Highway 11 a half mile west of Rock Cliff Road.

The location is one mile north and three miles east of the Ponca City city limits in Kay County.

The victim, Walter Alexander, was pronounced dead at the scene from a head injury and was transported to Grace Memorial Funeral Home in Ponca City, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Alexander was driving a 1996 Chevrolet pickup. The highway patrol reported he was eastbound on SH 11 when his truck departed the roadway to the right, struck the end of a guardrail, re-entered the roadway, went into a broadslide, went left of center and was struck in the passenger door by an oncoming westbound vehicle.

The second vehicle was a 2010 Dodge 3500 pickup driven by Justin Hawkins, 37, of Newkirk. Hawkins was not injured, the patrol reported.

Both vehicles were equipped with seat belts and air bags, according to the patrol’s report. Alexander was not using his seat belt and the air bag in his truck did not deploy. Hawkins was wearing his seat belt and his front driver and front passenger air bags did deploy.

The patrol said its investigation into the accident is continuing.
