WAGONER, OKLA. (KTUL) — After nearly three hours of debate and public input, the Wagoner County Board of Commissioners voted 2-1 to deny a solar energy company’s request to proceed with a proposed solar farm in Porter, Oklahoma.
The company had submitted a proposal to construct a large-scale solar facility spanning nearly 5,000 acres of agricultural land in Wagoner County.
The project, promoted as a renewable energy investment, drew widespread concern from local residents and nearby property owners.
Adjacent landowners voiced strong opposition during the meeting, citing concerns over the loss of productive farmland, disruption to the rural landscape, and potential decreases in property values.
Many also raised issues related to long-term land maintenance, the impact on wildlife and drainage, and the lack of clear answers from the company regarding project timelines and responsibilities after decommissioning.
With a 2-1 vote, the board ultimately sided with the community, effectively halting the proposed solar development.
The decision marks a significant win for local residents determined to preserve Wagoner County’s agricultural roots and rural character.
