During the Ponca City Board of Commissioner’s meeting held on Wednesday, June 11, the Commission confirmed the nomination of Mayor Kelsey Wagner for the appointment of Eddie (Edward) Shultz as Ponca City Fire Chief. Shultz started his career with the Ponca City Fire Department in 1994. Over the years, he was promoted to Driver, Senior Driver, Lieutenant, Captain, Division Chief of Training and now promoted to Fire Chief.
The position of Fire Chief plans, directs, manages and oversees the activities and operations of the Fire Department and must be well-versed in all operational and administration aspects of comprehensive emergency service operations, including fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, inspections and dispatch communications. The Fire Chief coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies, and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager.
City Manager Craig Stephenson stated, “We are excited that the successful candidate for the position of Fire Chief was an internal, long-term Ponca City Fire Department employee and we look forward to working with Shultz as the new Fire Chief.”
Shultz has a Bachelor’s of Technology and an Associates in Applied Science from Oklahoma State University, where he focused on municipal fire protection, emergency response and administration. He also has numerous certifications including: Fire Officer I&II, Fire Instructor I&II, Fire Fighter I&II, National & State EMT, Haz Mat Awareness, Haz Mat Operations, NIMS IS – 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800.
