Sunday was National Unclaimed Property Day and the Oklahoma State Treasurer wants to remind people they may have treasures waiting for them.

The Treasurer’s Office said there are about $1 billion in unclaimed assets waiting to be reunited with Oklahomans.

“The idea that we have $1.4 billion in Oklahoma, that’s a big number for Oklahoma,” State Treasurer Todd Russ said. “We’d like to get that back into the state’s energy and get that stirring around in the state. If people go out and spend $1.4 billion in Oklahoma, that’s a pretty big bounce for our economy.”

The unclaimed property includes forgotten paychecks, bank accounts, and family heirlooms.

For smaller claims, Russ says they can even mail you a check.

“If we can match up the identity on smaller claims, we’ll just pay those out,” Russ added. “There’s a lot of modernization that’s fixing to happen to hopefully speed up the process.”
