Oklahoma State Superintendent Lindel Fields addressed parents and guardians with updates from the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Fields clarified the recent decision regarding the use of Bibles in schools, stating, “Last week’s decision does not remove Bibles from our schools, it simply removes the expectation that teachers will use the Bible as curriculum for all grade levels and subjects.” The decision on curriculum selection remains with local school boards and leaders.

Looking ahead, Fields mentioned upcoming developments on state testing and social studies standards, and said he hopes to have answers in the near future. An operating budget will also be presented to the Board of Education this Thursday, Oct. 23.

Fields emphasized that everything the OSDE does is centered around three priorities: literacy, career pathways, and teacher recruitment and retention.

His message to parents and guardians comes during National Principals Month in October, where he encouraged everyone to celebrate the leadership and commitment of Oklahoma principals.
