Session is in full swing at the Capitol

By Rep. Ken Luttrell-

The Capitol has been filled with reviewing important legislation and thoughtful discussions about what will best serve Oklahomans. I also had the opportunity to meet with several constituents in my office. Those conversations are always valuable, and I appreciate the chance to hear your perspectives firsthand.

As session progresses, much of our work continues through the committee process. Legislation must first pass through a policy committee before moving to an oversight committee. Once measures clear oversight, they are eligible to be heard on the House floor. We are now in that stage, advancing bills through oversight and hearing them before the full House. This process ensures each proposal is carefully examined before becoming law.

As an update, 187 measures have passed out of House committees. This week alone, 14 House bills, one House Concurrent Resolution and one Senate bill were approved on the House floor.

Beyond committee work, it has been a busy and rewarding week meeting with visitors from across the state. We hosted FFA Day at the Capitol, and I enjoyed seeing students from Ponca City FFA experience the legislative process, some for the very first time. It is encouraging to see young leaders take an interest in how state government works.

I also had the pleasure of visiting with FCCLA leaders who stopped by the Capitol. These students represent the future of leadership in their schools and communities, and it is always impressive to see their dedication and professionalism.

In addition, speech-language pathology students from major universities across Oklahoma came to visit. Their field plays an important role in helping children and adults overcome communication challenges, and I appreciated the chance to learn more about their work and the needs they see across our state.

I also had the opportunity to visit with representatives from NERA and discuss issues impacting rural electric cooperatives and the communities they serve. Reliable energy infrastructure is critical to rural Oklahoma, and I value those conversations.

It was also good to catch up with longtime friends and former colleagues, including former Speaker Chris Steele and Joy Hofmeister. Public service takes many paths, but the shared goal of serving Oklahomans remains the same.

We were also honored to recognize Madison Layman, LPN, from Billings Fairchild Center as Nurse of the Week. She serves her patients with compassion and dedication while balancing her roles as a wife and mother. It is always meaningful to recognize individuals in our district who make a difference every day.

On Tuesday, we hosted Public School Advocacy Day, another opportunity to hear directly from students and educators across Oklahoma about the priorities in their communities.

I value hearing directly from the people I represent. I feel confident that we have already accomplished many great things for the state of Oklahoma this session, and there is more hard work ahead. If there’s an issue on your mind or a concern affecting your family or business, I want to know about it. You can reach me at [email protected] or call my office at (405) 557-7355. I’m honored to serve you and will keep working every day to move our state in the right direction.
