CLEVELAND COUNTY, Okla. –
Several counties across Oklahoma are now under burn bans as fire danger intensifies due to incoming strong winds. Cleveland County is the latest addition to this growing list, joining nine other counties already under restrictions.
Fire Danger Escalates in Oklahoma: What You Need to Know
Recent Fire Incident
A fire broke out in the median of Interstate 35 near Flood Ave and Franklin Road in Norman. It quickly spread, burning for nearly two miles. This serves as a clear reminder of how rapidly fires can move in these conditions.
Increased Fire Risk Factors
Deputy Chief Joel Chesser of the Norman Fire Department warns, “Right now, things are extremely dangerous when we’re dealing with open flames in these conditions. We have a lot of fuel out there, and the fuel burns very quickly, aggressively, and fast.”
The abundance of dry grass, trees, and shrubs left after a long growing season and months of limited moisture creates perfect conditions for rapid fire spread. What normally takes minutes to spread can now move in seconds, especially on windy days.
Strain on Resources
The wildfire season is putting significant pressure on city resources. Norman Fire Department reports that multiple stations are often dedicated to a single incident, stretching their ability to protect the rest of the city.
Protecting Your Home and Family
With Cleveland County now under a burn ban and high winds expected, fire officials emphasize the importance of preparation, especially for homeowners. Here are some steps you can take:
- Clear debris around your property
- Keep grass and low-hanging tree branches trimmed
- Prepare an evacuation plan
Deputy Chief Chesser advises, “Always call 911 if you have the ability. Have water hoses hooked up and ready. If it’s a small grass fire that you can safely manage, be prepared. But we don’t want to see people putting themselves in unnecessary danger.”
For your evacuation plan, remember to include:
- Essential medications
- Valuable items you want to take with you
- Emergency contact information for your family
Stay Informed
The Norman Fire Department encourages residents to sign up for emergency alerts through their city’s website to receive timely evacuation notices if needed.
Remember: All outdoor burning is currently banned in affected counties.
