OKLAHOMA CITY –
Many health officials have said that processed meat can be bad for you due to its link to increased health risks. Doctor Lacy Anderson tells us what those risks include.
Anderson says processed meat has been preserved through methods like smoking, curing, salting, or adding preservatives to extend its shelf life or change its flavor. Examples of processed meat include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, salami, pepperoni, beef jerky, deli meats, corned beef and canned meat.
“Processed meat is considered bad for you because it’s linked to an increased risk of cancer and heart disease,” Anderson says. “The World Health Organization classifies processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is strong evidence linking it to cancer.”
Because processed meats are also high in sodium and saturated fats, Anderson says they can also increase the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.
“The high-calorie content from saturated fats can also lead to weight gain and obesity, which also increases the risk of several types of cancer,” Anderson says. “Some research indicates a link between high processed meat consumption and an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.”
Anderson says hamburger meat isn’t processed, so a hamburger is a better choice than a hot dog when it comes to your health.
