A man who was hospitalized after being shot by an Oklahoma City Police officer in September has died, according to police.

Police say in the early morning hours of Sept. 24, officers were dispatched to a disturbance call in the 3000 block of SW 64th Terrace when they located 46-year-old Jason Redshirt, who was found shouting while standing outside of a residence in the area.

After attempting to speak with Redshirt to de-escalate the situation, OCPD says the man approached Sgt. Christopher Skinner and began to yell obscenities toward the officer. Following a repeated attempt at de-escalation, OCPD says Skinner used pepper spray on Redshirt after the man approached the officer aggressively.

OCPD said Redshirt then moved to a nearby trailer and began throwing bricks and pieces of wood that were lying nearby at Skinner, at which point Skinner shot Redshirt.

Immediately following the shooting, the department says officers administered aid to Redshirt until he could be transported to a local hospital. However, on Monday, OCPD said Redshirt had died.

OCPD says Sgt. Skinner sustained only minor injuries from being struck by the items that were thrown at him, and was placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
