In response to summer assaults at public parks, the River Parks Authority is enhancing safety at Turkey Mountain by installing over 30 surveillance cameras.

TULSA, Okla. –Safety concerns at Turkey Mountain are leading to major changes on the trails. Over 30 surveillance cameras are being installed in and around the trails.

Protection For Hikers

After two assaults over the summer at public parks, the River Parks Authority decided to install more safety cameras in the area. To make it work, crews had to install a radio tower and use solar power.

The community stepped up to help by donating nearly $80,000.

“It was an incredible response from the community, because they love this place so much and want it to be safe,” said Ryan Howell with River Parks Authority.

Camera Locations

Cameras are being installed at every major access point and in the trail system. Every camera will feed back to the Tulsa Police Department’s Real Time Information Center.

“You will not be able to enter or exit Turkey Mountain without your face being seen on camera,” Howell said.

Extra Protection

River Parks Authority offers more safety measures for hikers as well, including a hiking buddies program that meets two to three times a week. Officials also recommend bringing a friend, a dog or going with a group. It’s also best to go on the weekends when the trails are the busiest.

Visitors are urged to call 911 if they see any suspicious or illegal activity.
