NORMAN, Okla. –

Oklahoma University’s chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon has been closed, the University confirmed.

OU confirmed that the National Board of Directors for the fraternity voted to close the chapter following an internal review.

The University also told News that it was not consulted in this decision.

At this time, we don’t know what caused the closure of this chapter.

In a statement to News 9, OU said,

“We were surprised to learn Sigma Phi Epsilon’s National Board of Directors voted to close the Oklahoma Beta chapter following its internal review, acting without consultation with the University of Oklahoma.

With over 30% of students involved, the Greek community is a vibrant component of campus, and the University remains focused on student well-being and student resources.

This decision was made at the national level and questions regarding the national organization’s action should be directed to Sigma Phi Epsilon’s national headquarters.”

OU’s chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon had 292 members.

News 9 also reached out to the National Board of Directors for Sigma Phi Epsilon, who released the following statement:

“Sigma Phi Epsilon’s National Board of Directors has voted to close the Oklahoma Beta chapter at the University of Oklahoma, effective immediately. SigEp’s purpose is to build balanced men in a safe and healthy environment. As our track record shows, SigEp does not hesitate to institute accountability measures, including chapter closures, if undergraduates violate policy. The chapter repeatedly failed to live up to the expectations required by the Fraternity. These violations reflected a pattern of behavior inconsistent with our values, and they continued despite substantial support, education, and direct warnings from the Fraternity. Our priority is working closely with students to manage the chapter’s closure responsibly and ensure full compliance with all Fraternity requirements.”
