Former Vice President Mike Pence weighed in Sunday during CNN’s ‘State of the Union’, saying he supports President Donald Trump’s federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department and the deployment of the National Guard in D.C.

“If the District of Columbia was actually a state, it would have the highest homicide rate in the country,” Pence said. He continued to say that he supports the President’s actions because D.C. is where the national government operates and “thousands of people” work.

“I think the American people welcome the president taking decisive action,” Pence added. The former Vice President was also asked about the Jan. 6 Capitol riots — saying he wished that Trump had done more that day.

Pence’s comments Sunday come after President Donald Trump requested more National Guard members. The governors of West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio agreed to the request and are expected to send more than 700 of them to D.C. in the coming days.
