Kaw Fest Saturday at Sandy Beach

Ponca City Now - August 4, 2015 10:12 am

KawFest 2015 will include some new activities and some old favorites at Sandy Beach on Saturday, Aug. 8.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for teens and free for children 12 and younger.

The sun rises over Sandy Beach with yoga, led by Kay Smith, owner of OM Yoga, at 9 a.m. Get your day started with the experience of nurturing mind, body and spirit through the practice of yoga.

At the same time, kids can have fun on the Bounce Houses for $5 all day.

“ This year we’ll have three different bounce houses,” said Vanessa Forselius, KawFest event coordinator.

While the kids are playing in the sand, the older teens and adults will take to the Sand Volleyball Court with a Sand Volleyball Tournament starting at 2 p.m. Teams can still sign up by contacting either the Kaw Lake Association at 580-762-9494, Sand Volleyball Chairman Jaimee Miller at 580-716-8172 or Jessica Short, 580-716-4560. Entry fee is $50 for a team of up to five members.

All day long, teams will be cooking up delicious barbecue as part of the Pork Cook-off. This laid-back event is for the backyard cook who enjoys cooking for others and wants to show off their best recipes. At 5 p.m. people can purchase a tasting kit for $6 to sample the barbecue and vote for the People’s Choice. First place winner will win $500 cash.

New events this year include a Horseshoe Pitching Tournament at 10 a.m., sponsored by Farm Credit of Enid; Hot Dog Eating Contest at 1 p.m. and Turtle Races sponsored by United Country Shaw Real Estate at 3 p.m. Christian Band “To Bring a Sword” will provide entertainment that afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.

Then at 6 p.m. it will be time to sit back, eat your barbecue and listen to music from local favorite Morrison 33. “ Morrison 33 is an original band that refuses to be classified by any genre. We work hard to create unique music,” they proclaim on their website. They play a variety of music, many original compositions.

In order to make the event safer for children, this year attendees will park on the road leading up to Sandy Beach. “This will make the event safer for children and more family friendly,” said KawFest chairman Natascha Holloway
